26 year old Dewi Williams is celebrating a very successful year of rallying after clinching the ANWCC Novice Championship and, in only his first year of stage rallying, also finished third overall, beating a host of more experienced drivers in his Gwynedd Environmental Waste Services (GEWS of Penrhyndeudraeth) backed Peugeot 205.
Dewi, who works as an operator for Welsh Water in his local area of Pwllheli in North Wales, ended the year by contesting his first forest rally, having spent the last eight months contesting mainly single venue tarmac events. By finishing inside the top fifty overall and fourth in class on the highly competitive Cambrian Rally Dewi is confident that he is ready for the next step.
2008 has been a fantastic year for me. I began the year contesting a selection of single venues, including Weeton, which was a round of the 205 Challenge, where we finished third in class. This showed that I had the pace to run with the top 205 challenge drivers. With this in mind we did the Cambrian rally in November, my first gravel event, and I was very pleased to finish fourth in class, despite spending over a minute in a ditch on the last stage!
None of this would have been possible without the help and support of Dafydd Thomas from Gwynedd Environmental Waste Services (GEWS) to whom I must say a very big thanks.
Dewi is currently sourcing the budget to contest the full 205 Challenge in 2009. This extremely competitive championship features rallies throughout the country, with the end of year champion winning a ride in a Ford Focus World Rally Car amongst other great prizes.
