Cornishman Matt Cotton, one of the figureheads behind the new for 2009 MG ZR Challenge, has recently concluded a deal to contest the full seven round series this year, and intends to fight for the title from the word go.
29 year old Matt, who won the original MG ZR Supercup back in 2006, will contest the BTRDA support series in a Cannock Electrical and Mechanical supported MG ZR which will be run as part of a CWC (Chris Wright Competitions) two car team. Matt will partner Jim Ward in the pair of identical MG’s and whilst the pair are vowing to battle hard the challenge is all about having a bit of fun and bringing enjoyment back to rallying.
With all the politics that have crept into rallying recently Jim and I just want to bring back the fun element. There has been a lot of interest in the MG ZR Challenge and we are expecting upwards of ten cars to take to the start of the Wyedean Forest Rally in February.
I contested the British Rally Championship last year and would have loved another crack at the C2R2cup title but the budget just isn’t available at the moment. I have exciting plans for later in the year, which will be announced in due course but for now the MG ZR Challenge is my focus.
Matt, who will be co-driven by Glyn Thomas on the Chepstow based Wyedean Forest Stages, finished third overall in the C2R2cup in 2008 and was recently awarded the IRDC (International Rally Drivers Club) trophy for best improved performance throughout the year.
