Harry Flatters 09 (4)Tragedy struck on this years Harry Flatters when life long rally enthusiast John Phillips was hit in a freak accident. Whilst the rally continued, a dark cloud was left over the events proceedings. In the rally an intense battle was played out between Mark Solloway and Gwyndaf Evans. Solloway, co-driven by Den Golding, held a slender one second lead overnight and the Epynt specialist locked horns all day with the former British Champion until Gwyndaf’s car expired after the final stage. Terry Brown & Will Rogers took second a somewhat distant two and a half minutes behind with Julian Reynolds & Ian Oakey close behind in third, making it an all Escort MkII and Classic top three.

In the post Historic field it was an all Escort MkI affair which saw David Stokes & Guy Weaver take victory from the less powerful Escort MkI of Toby Adam & Neil Cook. Completing the podium were Ernie Graham & Andy Morgan. In the Historics Dessie Nutt & Geraldine McBride took top honours in their Porsche 911. They headed home the the Lotus Cortina of Paul Mankin & Desmond Bell, with the Porsche 911 of Rikki Proffitt & Paul Harrison third.

In the modern event a huge field tackled the stages and it was the ‘King of Epynt 2008’, Peter Lloyd, who took victory by over half a minute in his Impreza WRC. He was co-driven by Graham Handley in what was simply an awesome display of driving. Damian Cole & Martin Henry were second (Accent WRC) with Chris Jones & Ashley Trimble third in their Focus STi.

Due to the volume of footage we have two videos from the Harry Flatters Rally. Here is the 1st, from the Historic section of the event –
