Tempest 09 (69)Our annual trip to the Aldershot/Farnborough area saw us take in the 2009 Tempest Rally. Now in it’s familiar format of two rallies, one for 4WD and one for the 2WD crews, we managed to take in several stages. In the 4wd rally Will Nicholls & Nick Broom (Impreza WRC) took a comfortable victory once the attentions of Marcus Dodd & Alun Cook (Accent WRC) disappeared with retirement at the mid-point of the event. It was the Focus WRC pairings of Andrew Barnes & Guy Simmons along with John Lloyd & Adrian Cavenagh who took second and third respectively.

In the 2WD rally it was all about Longmoor for the two longest tests of the rally, on tarmac. The event at that point was being dominated by the Escort MkII’s of David Harris & Tim Babbage, Ernie Graham & Andy Greenland, Jim Munden & John Leigh and Terry Brown & Arwell Jenkins with just a matter of seconds separating the top 4. But once the crews reached Longmoor Mark Gamble & Janice Moore (C2R2 Max) jumped from sixth into the lead and on the following test Jason Pritchard & Robbie Durrant, in their similar car, edged past Gamble into a lead they would not surrender. It was a remarkable turnaround as Pritchard took victory on his second attempt at this event, from seventh overall at first service. Gamble finished second overall some 21 seconds back, with Munden third a further 50 seconds back and top Escort MkII.

Finally our compilation from a madcap day chasing round from stage to stage –
