After 45 competitive miles of the highly acclaimed RSAC Scottish Rally Steven Smith and veteran co-driver Russell Fair stopped the clocks six seconds ahead of their closest rival to win their first round of the Ecosse 205 Challenge.

The RSAC Scottish rally marks round five and the start of the second half of the Scottish Rally Championship as well as round three of the one-make Brick and Steel Ecosse 205 Challenge.

From the first of six tricky stages Smith and Fair were out ahead of their 205 rivals, with just under a two second advantage over the nearest Peugeot 205 after the first stage in the vast Ae forest. As the crews headed back to Dumfries for stage two the East Kilbride driver’s determined approach to win his class was clear, with Smith only dropping one second in this stage the pair remained 0.7 of a second ahead of the chasing 205 pack heading into the afternoons four stages.

“We were definitely on it from the outset, we came here to win and so far it’s going our way. The two stages this morning have been faultless – as has been the car. The other 205 drivers are pushing us hard so I am looking forward to a good fight over the remaining stages!” commented the Pro Clean supported driver.

By stage three it was obvious that the battle for first 205 honours came down to three teams which were swapping fastest times throughout the day. Approaching the final stage, a small problem with the front suspension in stage 3 and 4 resulted in the pair losing their lead and trailing first place by a mere 3.5 seconds.

It was shaping up to be a nail biting finale with only thirteen miles, three seconds, numerous crests and corners, all that stood in the teams way of their first ever 205 Challenge victory.

As the times came through from the last stage it was clear to see the Stevens huge last stage charge had succeeded and they had leapfrogged the leading 205 challenger into top spot on the podium! Beating them by nine and a half seconds through the stage and walking away with first Peugeot 205, 4th in class and 41st overall.

With round six of the Hankook Scottish Championship over, Steven is now out in front of the popular class 3 category as well as leading overall in the Ecosse 205 Challenge by nine points.

The next event for the duo is the Rally of Argyll, based in Oban on July the 10th, although this is not a round of the Hankook Scottish Rally Championship it marks round four of the Brick and Steel Ecosse 205 Challenge.
