Our first visit to Aberfeldy for the Colin McRae Forest Stages was also the first visit for the BHRC crews and was also their championship finale. Conditions on the day of the rally were certainly challenging with heavy rain and fog blighting the stages. Unsurprisingly it was experience that shone through as Stig Blomqvist & Anna Goni (Escort MkII) took a comfortable victory from Simon Tysoe & Cliffy Simmons (Escort MkII) with David Stokes & Guy Weaver (Escort MkI) just behind in 3rd overall. However Stokes took the post Historic class victory and had done more than enough to secure back to back titles. His only challenger Rikki Proffitt, co-driven by Phill Harrison in his Porsche 911, broke a driveshaft on the final stage and retired from the event. They also needed to win their class and hope Stokes would slip up, neither of which happened.

In the Historic class it was Graham Waite & Gill Cotton (Amazon) who took a storming win and had passed Proffitt for the class lead mid event. With the late retirement Derek & Roison Boyd (911) finished a seasons best 2nd with fellow Porcshe 911 crew Edmund Peel & Janet Craine in 3rd. In the post Historic class Barry Jordan & James Gratton-Smith (Escort MkI) finished just under 7 seconds behind Stokes in 2nd place with Dick Slaughter & Geoff Dearing (Escort MkI) a fine 3rd in their C3 class car. In the classics Jimmy McRae & Pauline Gullick (911) completed the podium.

Behind all of this was the normal action of the Scottish championship. Whilst David Bogie & Kevin Rae were not present after sewing up the championship two rounds earlier, the battle was on for second place. Euan Thorburn & Paul Beaton (Evo IX) set a blistering pace and secured the win and 2nd in the championship with Shaun Sinclair & Chris Hamill (Evo IX) less than 10 seconds behind, keeping them honest event long. Mike Faulkner & Peter Foy (Evo VI) were third and slipped back to 3rd in the championship also.

In the 2WD’s Joe Price & Chris Brooks (Escort MkII) looked to have sprung a surprise on the championship and local crews. Sadly it all came to nought as their lead going into the final stage counted for nothing as they retired before the start of that stage. So in an excellent 4th overall and top 2WD crew were Malcolm Buchanan & Ian Nicoll (Escort MkII). Michael Horne & Robbie Mitchell (Escort MkII) were a distant 2nd with an out of sorts Steve Bannister & Louise Sutherland (Escort MkII) completing the podium.
