Bucking the national trend of reduced entries, 69 cars will line up at Dalby Forest on Sunday 4th November for the 10th running of the Malton Forest Rally. This is nine more than last year. Sponsored by MEM PROTON, who prepare Proton S2000 rally cars for the Asia Pacific and IRC championships, this is the 14th year that proprietor Chris Mellors, a former British rally champion, has supported Malton Motor Club events.

The event is divided into two categories, with Historic cars running 10 minutes in front of the main field. Leading the Historics will be last year’s winner Tim Mason from Bradford is in his Porsche 911, closely challenged by Malton potato farmer Steve Bannister in his very competitive Mk II Escort. They will be followed by Matthew Robinson (Mk II Escort), Charlie Taylor from Northallerton, current leader in the Motoscope Northern Historic Championship and Pickering garage owner Steve Magson in his Chevette HSR. Chris Birkbeck from Skelton has borrowed Pete Smith’s Opel Kadett as Pete is competing in the Silver Fern Historic event in New Zealand this weekend. A total of 22 historic cars are entered.

The top five Historics are;
101     Tim Mason/Graham Wild            Bradford    Porsche 911

Leading the main field away will be event favourites Charlie Payne and Craig Thorley in the Just Ferries sponsored Ford Focus World Rally Car, hoping to make it four wins on the trot. Their main challenger is likely to be closely followed by Peter Stephenson/Ian Windress, also in a Focus WRC. Stephen Petch/John Richardson in their Hyundai Accent WRC are followed by Jeff McNeil from York (Subaru Impreza) and local father and son team Phil and Simon Pickard, also in an Impreza. The event counts for a number of regional championships and the Motoscope Northern Historic series.

Two very interesting Safety cars will be preceding the competitors through the stages in the form of cross country vehicles which usually compete over rougher ground. One is a Bowler Wildcat fitted with a 5 litre Rover V8 engine. The other is a Warrior fitted with a 3.5 litre V6 engine from a Nissan 350Z. Both are crewed by experienced international competitors.

Spectators are welcome at the event and special car parks have been arranged at Langdale (Birch Hall), Cropton (Spiers House) and Gale Rigg (Raindale Head) forests. Local scouts and Rotary Club will marshal these.  Any revenue surplus will go to these organisations. Full details of timings are shown below or are available to download from by following the link to Spectator Information. A charge of £10 per car will give access to all spectator stages.
