riponian13 (2)On only our 2nd visit to the Riponian we witnessed Charlie Payne & Craig Thorley (Focus WRC) return to form. After a slow start to the Wyedean last weekend they set fastest time on the opening 5 stages and joint fastest on the 6th stage to hold a comfortable lead at service. The afternoon saw the top 4 exchange fastest stage times but the damage had been done and Payne took a 55 second victory from Ian Joel & Graeme Wood (Escort Cosworth). Peter Stephenson & Ian Windress (Focus WRC) completed the podium ahead of Kevin Proctor & David Bellerby (Impreza WRC) who had lost ground in the first half of the rally.

Looking at the other battles Matthew Robinson & Nigel Hutchinson (Escort MkII) came home 1st 2WD crew and 5th overall, even with a time penalty for jumping the start on stage 4. The rest of the 2WD podium saw the Historic crews take the remaining places. Tim Pearcey & Neil Shanks (Escort MkII) ended up only 18 seconds behind Robinson and won the Historic class by almost a minute, but they only captured the lead on stage 8.

Up to that point Chris Birkbeck & Kim Baker (Mazda RX7) had been leading the category but they were grateful to take 2nd in the Historics and 3rd 2WD as they were almost caught by the battle behind them. Charlie Taylor & Steve Bielby (Escort MkII) almost caught Birkbeck finishing just 4 seconds back, after setting fastest time on the opening stage. They ended up 3rd in the Historics tied on time with Barry Jordan & James Gratton-Smith (Escort MkII), but getting the nod on count back, thanks to their stage 1 time.
