Justin Mcarthy-Eburru 200The two car Tomcat Africa Rally Raid team impressed mightily on the recent “Eburru 200” rally raid which took place on Soysambu Ranch and Conservancy. Both V8 powered Tomcats were amongst the pace setters all weekend and only an electrical issue prevented the TVR powered car of Eddie Belcher and Crispin “Whiz” Kennedy from taking the outright win… the pair eventually finished a close fought second in the car category!

After weeks of torrential rain the sun came out to play for Round 2 of the 2013 JCB Ganatra Rally Raid Championship. However, all of the gathered crews were still faced with thick glutinous mud on Day one. Eddie and Crispin would drop time with a broken ball joint but rally raid debutant Justin Mcarthy, in the sister car, was having a fantastic debut.

Day 2 would see the surviving crews tackle the longest leg ever seen in Kenyan rally raids. 170 kilometres of varied terrain, including a climb up into the famous Eburru Forest, guaranteed to test man and machine. Eddie dropped more time with a minor electrical fault but once the Tomcat was on the move it was the fastest vehicle on the course. Justin struggled slightly with the difficult navigation but was still in the running for a top finish when he stopped to help a stricken rider who had crashed. This honourable act rewarded the crew with the “Spirit of the Raid” award!

Eddie Belcher-Eburru 200Tomcat Africa lead driver Eddie Belcher was understandably overjoyed with the results; we might have had a few small problems but once again we proved that the Tomcat is a formidable vehicle and a win cannot be far off. Hats off to Justin, he had never even driven the car before this weekend and yet he was rapidly on the pace. We hope to see him back in a Tomcat soon!
