After a seven year absence the MSA British Rally Championship is back on the RSAC Scottish Rally, but a couple of little changes have taken place in the intervening years.

Seven years ago the entry list had just five World Rally cars, the cars likely to win the event outright. In 2013 the number of entries is similar, but the number of potential winners has doubled – although one crew has had other ideas on the first two rounds of this season.

Most of the top ten on this year’s BRC have opted for the high tech Citroën DS3 R3T, its 1600cc turbocharged engine producing enough power to put a smile on anyone’s face and enough torque to pull down a house – well, nearly! Despite a hugely impressive display of pace and consistency for the vast majority of the race, electrical gremlins in the first hour of the 24 Hours of Le Mans robbed the Murphy Prototypes racing team of their bid to win their class at this year’s 90th running of the endurance classic last weekend.

At the halfway point of the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC), Volkswagen dominates the proceedings with its fifth win in seven rallies. The Volkswagen team has also comfortably extended its lead in this, the most prestigious motorsport world championship after Formula 1. Sébastien Ogier/Julien Ingrassia (F/F) won the rally in Sardinia in their Polo R WRC with a lead of 1m 16.8s over their closest competitor, Thierry Neuville (Ford).
