Alex Parpottas Ford Fiesta Pirelli Star DriverJust four weeks after narrowly missing out on the coveted Pirelli Star Driver Nomination in Ulster, MSA British Rally Championship contender Alex Parpottas caught the eye of the selection committee on last weekend’s Rally Yorkshire and became the fifth driver this year to be awarded the sought after “Yellow Jacket”. Once again driving his Buzz Sweets Ford Fiesta R2, Parpottas managed to impress the panel throughout the two day event and will now head to the Pirelli Shootout later in the year where he will be vying for the prize of a fully paid drive in the 2014 MSA British Rally Championship.

The fifth round of the championship kicked off under the cover of darkness on Friday night and two blasts through the Dalby forest complex would be a tough start to the event for Parpottas and regular co-driver Jamie Edwards from Wrexham. Finding it hard to settle into a comfortable rhythm and “commit” the fast sections, he welcomed the arrival of the overnight halt and a chance to plan his attack during daylight hours.

A good night’s sleep was to prove all important for the 20 year old from Hoddesdon and from the first stage on Saturday morning Parpottas stamped his mark on the leader board, moving rapidly towards the front of the R2 class.  With just 3 stages remaining to haul in the leaders, the Fiesta R2 developed an engine problem which caused a lack of power from the 1600cc motor. Nursing the car back to the Pickering finish Parpottas had done enough to reach his year-long goal of winning a star driver nomination and he was presented with the news on the finish ramp in Pickering.

“The Pirelli Star Driver nomination has been all I’ve ever wanted this year” explains Parpottas. “It’s a fantastic opportunity and I am really excited to be able to show the panel what I can do in the shootout.  The R2 category is such a hard fought class and you have to be at the top of your game to be competitive which makes this nomination a great honour. I have to say a massive thank you to everyone that has helped me this year; Buzz Sweets, my family and of course Jamie who has been a fantastic support throughout the championship”.

Parpottas will now turn his attention to the final round of the championship, Rallye Sunseeker which takes crews to the harbour town of Poole on the South Coast in just three weeks time. This event will bring the curtain down on his fight for the FiestaSport Trophy and RallyTwo efforts, both of which have podium positions at stake for the youngster.

Alex is supported by Buzz Sweets and is run by Buzz Motorsport.
