Newly crowned MSA British Junior Rally Champion and winner of the Twingo Renaultsport R1 Trophy UK finished a gruelling 230km of twisty mountain roads featured on Rallye Du Var, the final round of the French Rally Championship.

The Renault funded drive in a Twingo R2 rally car came as a prize for winning the 2013 UK single make series which features in the British Rally Championship. The car was run by Italian team Gima Autosport alongside a second R2 for the German Twingo R1 champion who sadly exited the rally, crashing out just 1000 meters from the start of the first stage.

Under pressure to bring the only remaining team Twingo home, Ben and his co-driving father Jason, relished the challenge on this, their third only asphalt rally and the very first time the pair had made their own pace notes.

The event, which was based to the north of St Tropez on the Cote d’Azur, was not without drama; a few minor skirmishes with chicanes and a very big moment on two wheels did not prevent the Oswestry-based crew taking their place on the finish ramp. A broken drive shaft on the final stage almost ended the run for home, but nursing the car gently, Ben and Jason reached the finish back in Sainte Maxime.

A delighted Ben said at the finish, “This rally was the culmination of a great season in the British Rally Championship. It was a real challenge and great fun, but we’ve learnt a huge amount throughout the year and managed to put lots of it into practice here. The Twingo R2 was brilliant and we’d like to say a massive thank you to Renault and Gima for delivering such an excellent prize.”
