Bird_MWRallyFresh from victory on last month’s Malcolm Wilson Rally, Cumbrian rally driver Paul Bird heads to the Betta Somerset Stages Rally this Saturday determined to hold onto his lead in the 2014 REIS BTRDA Rally Series.

Along with Welsh co driver Aled Davies, the pair head south for round three of the series in the Pirelli-shod, FBP, Fuchs Titan, Rapid Solicitors and Mac Tools-backed and Dom Buckley Motorsport-prepared Ford Focus WRC07, but know they will have a tough battle on their hands as usual.

However, the British Superbike and MotoGP team boss from Langwathby near Penrith has a couple of aces up his sleeve to help his bid, including having his lucky mascot in the car – daughter Lexi’s toy crocodile which so far has brought them two outright victories and a runner-up placing in the three outings as a passenger.

Adding to the competition this weekend is Birdy’s old rival and sparring partner Steve Perez who wheels out his Ford Focus WRC for a rare outing. The pair are good friends and already the banter has started which will no doubt end with the loser paying a hefty price for the post rally celebrations!

The event sees the start of a busy period for the 2005 National Champion with his MotoGP team racing in Texas before the MCE British Superbike Championship gets underway at Easter at Brands Hatch. Thereafter it’s the Manx National Rally which Bird has won three times before flying out to Sol Rally Barbados to attempt a third successive victory in the Caribbean.

Paul Bird: “We have made a good start in the BTRDA series and the intention is to keep that momentum going but it won’t be easy. I’m testing tomorrow as we have some new things to try on the car and I know the nature of the event as I’ve done the rally before. I’m going to give multiple TT winner John McGuinness a run out in the car at the test to see what he thinks too! Lexi’s toy crocodile is packed and coming with us once again and I have added incentive this weekend as my old mate Steve Perez is having a wobble round but he has no chance of beating me! The main aim is to get plenty of points on the board and given I’m missing a trip to Texas this weekend, I need to make it count.”
