Bird Trackrod14aCumbrian rally driver Paul Bird kept his hopes of victory in the 2014 REIS BTRDA Rally Series well and truly alive when he took a battling runner-up spot in today’s Trackrod Forest Stages Rally.

In the dry and dusty conditions of the classic Yorkshire stages, the British Superbike and MotoGP team boss from Langwathby near Penrith was hoping to add to his victories on the Malcolm Wilson, Nicky Grist and Woodpecker rallies and in doing so, give himself the best possible chance of lifting the crown on next month’s Cambrian Rally in Wales. Steve Perez & Paul Spooner (Focus WRC) only set one fastest stage time on the first stage but they held on to take victory from Paul Bird & Aled Davies (Focus WRC) by 3.4 seconds. Bird went fastest on the final 3 stages but it proved not be enough, so the title fight is set up superbly for the final round in 3 weeks time. David Weston & Kirsty Riddick (Imprzea WRC) completed the podium just over 20 seconds further back, after setting the fastest time through the 2nd stage of the rally. There will be no let up in the duel between Euan Thorburn and David Bogie for the 2014 ARR Craib MSA Scottish Rally Championship as the two go head-to-head on the penultimate round, the Colin McRae Forest Stages, next Saturday <Oct 4th>

Thorburn and co-driver Paul Beaton moved closer to securing the Scottish crown with a successful defence of their Merrick Stages title in Galloway last month in their Ford Focus WRC, while Bogie, with Kevin Rae on the notes, had to settle for third after his Ford Fiesta R5+ picked up a puncture on the second stage.
