It was only our third trip to the Riponian and it already is a firm favourite despite the weather. In many respects the snow at the end of the day made the event for our final stage, Roppa. Charles Payne & Andrew Roughead (Fiesta) dominated the event with a series of fastest stage times, (all but the last 2 stages), saw them take a comfortable victory. In a superb 2nd place were Matthew Robinson & Sam Collis (Escort MkII) who had been on it all day, benefiting from final stage dramas which saw Ian Joel & Graeme Wood (Escort Cosworth) drop the best part of a minute and a half on the final stage.
This was still good enough for 3rd overall after a battle through the first half of the event with Peter Stephenson & Ian Windress (Focus WRC) who retired after stage 10. Other notable results included a fine 6th overall for Mat Smith & Giles Dykes in their 1400 Satria, Charlie Taylor & Alan Ward (Escort MkII) were the 2nd historic crew home behind Robinson and entertainers of the day went to Wayne Hirst & Dave Evans (Escort MkII). They officially did not finish the event but had two offs in front of us in the 4 stages we saw them and clear signs they had rolled at some other point.
