Race Retro VatanenWhilst there were celebrations galore at this year’s Race Retro at Stoneleigh Park, it was rally legend Ari Vatanen who stole the show, spending hour after hour chatting to thousands of fans and signing autographs and memorabilia.

As visitor numbers increased to 29,700 over the weekend (29,100 in 2014), so did the anticipation on Saturday as Ari opened the live rally stage by taking to the wheel of a BMW for a demonstration lap, much to the crowd’s delight.

Still preferring to go sideways, Ari then mingled with fans in the paddock before heading into the halls for an interview with host Gemma Scott followed by the first autograph signing of the day that took over an hour as fans patiently waited to meet their hero.

There were visits from other motorsport heroes and famous names over the three-day show such as racing driver David Brabham, former British Touring Car Championship star Anthony Reid, and rally trio Jimmy McRae, Dai LLewellen, and Bill Gwynne.

Also appearing were South African racer Dick Mawson, Jaguar test driver Norman Dewis OBE, rally driver Russell Brookes, former Top Gear stars Tony Mason and Steve Berry, plus Race Retro favourites Win Percy, Barrie Whizzo Williams and Willy Cave.

Radio presenter Chris Evans and Channel Five’s The Classic Car Show host Quentin Willson were spotted in Silverstone Auctions’ record-breaking sale. Silverstone Auctions achieved a 78 per cent sales rate, totaling £3.62 million (65% sale rate and £1.6m sales total in 2014).

Event director Tom Siddall said: “It was a great weekend for motorsport fans who had waited for Ari to make a rare appearance in the UK. He did us proud and was one of the last people to leave the halls each night, still shaking hands with visitors and exhibitors.”

Celebrations included Chevron Racing’s golden anniversary and the BMC competitions department while tributes were paid to Bjorn Waldegard, Richard Burns, Sir Jack Brabham, and motorcycle racer Mike Hailwood.

Race Retro, sponsored by Peter James Insurance and Stewart Miller Insurance, returns in 2016 with dates to be announced shortly. For the further updates, visit http://www.raceretro.com.
