The ninth episode of The Classic Car Show airs tonight on Channel 5 at 7pm and this evening’s show certainly majors on style, as the spotlight falls on a surprisingly affordable yet luxurious Mercedes-Benz, a pint-sized Fiat and an elegant Buick convertible – with lots else besides.

The R107 Mercedes-Benz SL could just be the perfect everyday classic, says Quentin Willson. Built from 1971 to 1989, the SL is the marque’s second longest-running production model – and for good reason. Quentin explains how the well-built SL makes one of the most practical daily driving classics, with values predicted to rise too.

Looking at another practical but usable classic, comedian Jennifer Saunders takes the original Fiat 500 on a tour of London’s Portobello Road Market. Re-launched in 2007, the Fiat 500 has become a city car favoured by many; Jennifer explains why the original is the perfect urban classic.

Taking a tour slightly further afield, Jodie and Quentin head to America, the birthplace of the road trip. With the sole quest to see the sunset over the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, the pair take a 1968 Buick Le Sabre on the legendary Pacific Coast Highway, finding time to meet old and new classic car friends along the way including film producer, racing driver and car fan Chad McQueen – son of the legendary movie star, Steve McQueen.

Meanwhile, Bruno Senna takes a Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing to the handling track for a hot lap. Shod with road tyres and standard suspension, will the Gullwing have what it takes to beat the record time of the Jaguar E-Type Lightweight? Tune in to find out.
