Brettex Site Services backed Rhys Yates secured the MSA English Rally Championship title at last weekend’s Tempest Rally in Aldershot, taking an impressive seventh overall in the two-wheel-drive section of the event in the process.  Needing only a comfortable finish in his class to secure the award, Yates took the Brettex Fiesta R2 to third in class 2 which netted the 23 year old from Chesterfield his first MSA (Motor Sports Association) titled award.

Yates has had an impressive inaugural year in the sport, contesting the REIS-Ravenol BTRDA Rally Series in the Fiesta R2 with much success. Winning class B10 and the hard-fought Junior award, Yates had always targeted the English title as his main goal of the season and would enter the Tempest in a bid to stay at the top of the leader board.

Co-driven by Tom Woodburn, the duo have recently stepped up to the world leading M-Sport R5 for the closing half of the season but it would be a transition back to the 1600cc front wheel drive Fiesta R2 for the pairing if they were to take the points required to grab the championship.

The unique forestry stages used on the event would suffer from heavy rain and high winds on the lead up and saw no sign of abating as crews headed out for the first loop of stages near the rally base of Aldershot near Farnborough. Needing only a solid result to secure to the title, Yates was never outside of the top ten in the two wheel drive event and tackled each of the ten stages without trouble to take the English title at the first attempt

“It’s been an amazing season for me and the championship win is just the icing on the cake” said Yates.  “This was really our main goal this year and the BTRDA class and Junior titles were a bonus to be honest. We have finished every rally we started in the R2 and that really is a credit to the team for all their hard work and thanks to Brettex for their support which has given us our fantastic results this year.”
