Geoff and orphaned elephantFormer World Rally Championship journalist Geoff Mayes has upgraded to the SPV category of the Kenyan National Rally Championship season and will use his Silverspread Meru and Maxxis Tyres supported V8 monster to contest the forthcoming KCB Kajiado Rally which takes place this weekend. Mayes will be codriven by Shameer Yusuf for the first time.

Mayes, who has recorded outright podium results in the KNRC as a codriver to Raaji Bharij, switched seats two years ago and contested selected rounds in 2015 at the wheel of a two wheel drive Toyota Levin. But for 2016 he has upgraded to a new car and will now run in the same class as Flash Tundo and Peter Horsey! The Levin has undergone some major work over the off season and is now up for sale. Thanks to Silverspread and Maxxis I have the opportunity to contest selected rounds of the SPV championship which should be a lot of fun.

Mayes, who is a rally ambassador for Hands off our Elephants, will once again use the car to promote and raise awareness for the plight of Africa’s wildlife which is currently being devastated at an alarming rate! My day job is working as a safari guide and although I have seen a huge improvement in conservation recently, poaching and human/ wildlife conflict is still an enormous threat and it is up to us, this generation, to do something before we lose our natural heritage.

Geoff Mayes and Shameer Yusuf will run at Car 112 this weekend and as well as support from Silverspread Meru Rally Team and Maxxis Tyres Kenya, the pair are also assisted by Team Magic and Unifilters Kenya.

The rally starts from KCB Kajiado at 8am on Saturday morning and features over 200 kilometres of rallying action.
