VW May16bTCR International Series
Triple success for the Golf GTI TCR in Spa-Francorchamps

The third race weekend of the TCR International Series ended with a one-two-three result for the Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR. In the second race in Spa-Francorchamps (B), Jean-Karl Vernay (F) of Leopard Racing won ahead of his team-mates Stefano Comini (CH) and Antti Buri (FIN). It was the first success this season for the 330 hp Volkswagen GTI TCR and it was the first ever TCR win for Vernay and Leopard Racing – and not far from the team headquarters in Luxembourg. “What can I say, except that I’m happy to have given Leopard and Volkswagen a first win,” said Vernay. “My team-mates and I drove an attacking but careful race and everything worked out the way we expected.” In the first race on the renowned Grand Prix track in the Belgian Ardennes, Davit Kajaia (GE) of Engstler Motorsport in seventh place was the best Volkswagen driver. Guest starter Buri, who is usually in action in the TCR Germany, finished tenth; Mikhail Grachev (RUS, Engstler Motorsport) and Vernay finished in eleventh and 14th place. Difficulties forced Comini to retire on the first lap. The next race weekend will be held in Imola (I) from 20 to 22 May.

Audi Sport TT Cup
Volkswagen rally driver Mikkelsen and US star Speed in action in Hockenheim

Successful guest start: Volkswagen rally driver Andreas Mikkelsen (N) and Rallycross star Scott Speed (USA) were convincing on their debut in the Audi Sport TT Cup. At the first race weekend of the one-make cup in Hockenheim (D), both drivers finished in the top 10 in the first race: Speed finished seventh, Mikkelsen crossed the finish line in ninth place as Volkswagen Motorsport Director Jost Capito looked on. In the second race, former Formula1 driver Speed, 2015 Global Rallycross Champion in the Volkswagen Beetle GRC, showed his skills in duels: The American was left standing on the warm-up lap, had to start from the back of the grid, and worked his way up the field from 20th into eleventh place. Mikkelsen was  also unlucky at the start of this race: After a drive-through penalty due to a false start, he dropped down – from fifth place at some time – to the back of the field and ended up finishing in 17th place. The wins in both races went to Sheldon van der Linde (ZA). “It was a lot of fun,” said Mikkelsen. “It’s a shame that I had a false start in the second race because my lap times were really good.” From 19 to 22 May, it’s back to gravel for Mikkelsen: The man currently in fourth place in the FIA World Rally Championship will be back alongside his co- driver Anders Jæger (N) in the Polo R WRC at the Rally Portugal.

FIA World Rallycross Championship
Kristoffersson strong in Hockenheim, but without luck

No joy for the new team Volkswagen RX Sweden in Hockenheim (D). At the second event of the FIA World Rallycross Championship, Johan Kristoffersson (S) finished seventh, and team- mate Anton Marklund (S) finished in 15th place. Kristoffersson in particular showed the great potential of the 600 hp Volkswagen Polo RX Supercar throughout the weekend: With multiple best times in the qualifying races, he clinched pole position for the second semi-final.

However, in that race Kristofferson’s car was hit by a rival while he was in the lead, which caused tyre damage to the Polo. But Kristoffersson refused to give up in front of thousands of spectators and with a brilliant driving performance led the field until the end of the fifth lap. However, he lost ground after that and missed out on making it into the final by just one position when he finished fourth. Victory in Hockenheim went to Mattias Ekström (S, Audi). In the drivers’ standings, Kristoffersson is now in fourth place with 39 points, Marklund is 14th with nine points. In the team standings, Volkswagen RX Sweden remain second with 48 points. The Swedish team is in with a chance of making up points on championship leaders EKS (93 points) next weekend (13–15 May), when the WRX elite take a trip to Mettet (B).
