bhrc-iom16cThe special award winners from the seventh and eighth rounds of the 2016 Mintex MSA British Historic Rally Championship, the Isle of Man Classicagh (15-17 September) have been announced.

Father and son crew Bob and Dale Gibbons collected the award for the ‘Best Improvement on Seeding’, which is a set of axle brake pads from Mintex. They started as car 111 and finished 57th overall as they secured the BHRC Category 1 championship title with a tremendous performance in their Ford Cortina Mk2 GT.

The ‘Spirit of the Rally’ product award from Fuchs Lubricants went to Phil and Mick Squires who worked flat out for weeks to get their new Ford Escort Mk2 ready in time. They had a great rally, but lost over 20 minutes when the car cut out on the final stage. Immediately after the rally, Phil had to be ready to ship his older car to New Zealand on Wednesday and then prepare for his daughter’s wedding the following weekend.

Finally, Simon Tysoe won the ‘Hard Charger’ award of a 20-litre jerry can from Green Valley Industrial Supplies. On only his second event on the Isle of Man, he pushed hard all weekend and battled back from 12 minutes in a ditch to clinch the BHRC Category 2 title. Tysoe and co-driver Paul Morris celebrated with some do-nuts before crossing the finish line in front of the TT Grandstands. They also recorded their thanks to the team of spectators who manhandled the car out of the ditch on the penultimate stage.

The full TV report of the event will be broadcast on Motors TV at 9.35pm on the evening of Friday 23 September.
