omologato-porsche-917aOmologato has honoured quite possibly the greatest and most iconic race car of all time, the Porsche Salzburg 917, with a stunning, limited-edition timepiece.

Inspired by the 917’s design and carrying the scintillating style of the car itself, Omologato’s watch gives buyers the chance to own a piece of motorsport history and pay homage to a truly remarkable machine.

First launched in 1969, Porsche Salzburg’s 917 was conceived to compete in the World Sportscar Championship after new rules allowed brands to produce 25 racers, rather than 50.

And although race success was hard to come by in its inaugural year, the 917 more than made amends in 1970.

At the Le Mans 24 Hours, Germany’s Hans Herrmann and British driver Richard Attwood navigated the stunning Porsche to victory, seeing off stiff competition from the likes of several Ferrari 512s and the Alfa Romeo Tipo 33.

Such was its brilliance in the race that the car was chosen to play a leading role in Steve McQueen’s 1971 film ‘Le Mans’, and its iconic status continued to grow from then on.

It was with the 917 that Porsche first locked horns with the massively powerful, large-capacity racing cars. The 580hp from the thumping 12-cylinder 4.5-litre engine of the 917 set new standards in racing. So much so that even decades later, experts rate this Porsche as one of the greatest sports cars of the century.

omologato-porsche-917bOmologato’s watch pays tribute to the No. 23 Le Mans-winning model, with a level of quality and style that sets it apart from the rest. Capturing the red, white and black colour scheme perfectly, the timepiece features sharp-looking Guards Red stitching that contrasts nicely with the 22mm, high-quality, black Italian grain leather strap.

The 43mm face itself is incredibly striking, too, with plenty of subtle design highlights. The matt-finished black face is surrounded by stylish chrome, while the 917 insignia at the bottom adds to the imposing image.

The right chronograph dial features the famous number 23 that donned the sides and bonnet of Herrmann and Attwood’s 917, plus the outer rim features a tachymeter that serves as a constant reminder of the car’s incredibly pace.

The 917 features a Japanese Quartz movement, which operates smoothly and promises quality of manufacturing. It also brings a desirable level of precision, reliability and accuracy that only comes with the very best watches.

Omologato is offering the 917 watch in strictly limited numbers, as only 200 being made. The lucky owners will receive an ownership certificate, together with a bespoke case, and those who pre-order can choose the number of their timepiece.

Omologato founder Shami Kalra said: “If you had to think of the best race car in the world, the chances are you’d land on the Porsche 917. It was a true icon of its time and laid the foundation for Porsche’s success at Le Mans and beyond.

“When the 917 won the 24 Hours race in 1970, it became an instant legend and a car that I’ve personally always loved. It’s one of my favourite racers of all time, and I’ve worked tireless to make sure this timepiece does justice to the incredible car. This watch is perfect for a motorsport enthusiast looking to pay the ultimate tribute to one of the best cars in the business.”

The Omologato 917 is strictly limited to 200 examples, and is priced at £339. Pre-orders can be placed on the Omologato website, with deliveries due in January 2017.
