birkett16-7The Birkett continues to be a fascinating race and a highlight of the year as 70 teams took to the Silverstone GP circuit, for the end of season 6 hour race. After the first hour 3 teams were separated by just under 45 seconds with Tracktime Solutions in a fierce battle with JPR Motorsport (Sakr Rapx S1) with We Don’t Like Second back (Radical PR6 & SR3s) in 3rd place, but JPR Motorsport came unstuck in the 2nd hour where only having one race car saw them drop 5 laps. Tracktime Solutions still lead but having used their Radical SR3s early on the Lotus Exige drivers were out on track in the 3rd hour and We Don’t Like Second took the lead and never looked back.

In the final reckoning We Don’t Like Second took the scratch race by 4 laps from Tracktime Solutions with RGB’Argy (BMW E36 M3s) completing the podium ahead JPR Motorsport who took the honour of fastest lap. In the classes We Don’t Like Second took class D, class C went to RGB’Argy with Rock N Roll Centres 5th overall on the way to class B victory. Class A was won by Gradsports (Caterham 7 Supersports), who finished 9th overall.

Of course this is only half the story and perhaps the more interesting race is the handicap race where the highest ranked team, We Don’t Like Second, had 44 laps to make up on the lowest rank team Only Smarties Have The Answer (Smart 4Two 450 & 451s). The first hour saw BMW Cup (BMW 325s & 328i) lead from Only Smarties Have The Answer. The 2nd hour saw Tegiwa M3 Cup (BMW E46 M3s) took over at the top from BMW Cup with Carbon 8 Coupe Cup B (Hyundai Coupes).

Tegiwa M3 Cup continued to lead through the 3rd and 4th hours but at the end of the 5th hour Carbon 8 Coupe Cup B had the lead with their sister team Carbon 8 Coupe Cup A up in to 3rd place. At the end of the 6 hours only one of the top three teams after 5 hours remained on the podium, Carbon 8 Coupe Cup B held on to take victory by a lap from Red Rascals (BMW E46 M3s) and DHD Motorsport (Honda Civics & Integras along with a Proton Satria), who finished just 13 seconds apart.

To highlight how hard the handicap element of the Birkett is the scratch race winners were only 60th out of 70 teams, in the handicap race. Only Smarties Have The Answer were not much better in 44th place, so it really does intrigue the spectator and give the crews another dimension to worry about.
