In 1947, Enzo Ferrari established Scuderia Ferrari. The prancing horse has become synonymous with success and victory, however its history is tinged with tragedy. 14 years after its inception, the Scuderia won its first constructors championship in Formula One with Phil Hill at the wheel, winning 5 out of the 8 races along the way. Victory in Formula One was instrumental in funding outings at Le Mans and other motorsports series in order to build respect and brand reputation.
This bespoke new Omologato watch pays tribute to the euphoria of the 1961 season. The Maranello pays tribute to each of the Italian marques’ victories during the prosperous season by highlighting each victorious circuit in Rosso red around the bezel.
Monza, the spiritual home of Ferrari, was the scene of the Italian team’s first championship success. The pivotal race was marred by one of the most terrible accidents in the history of the sport. Ferrari driver Wolfgang von Trips lost control of his car and crashed into a stand, killing himself and 15 spectators. The grand prix was not stopped and the race was won by team mate Phil Hill, who won the World Championship with one race to go.
Due to the events in Italy and the Scuderia’s subsequent maiden championship success, Enzo Ferrari had the audacity and arrogance to pull out his one remaining car from the final race at Watkins Glen, USA. The 1961 season may have been marred by events in Monza, but it also played host to an iconic achievement.
