Back to dry and dusty conditions for the 2017 Woodpecker Rally saw a quality field take on the best stages of the Welsh marches. Jamie Anderson & Ella Flynn (Lancer WRC) were fastest through the opening stage and were joint fastest on the 2nd stage to hold an early lead. Paul Bird & Jamie Edwards (Focus WRC) were in 2nd and when gearbox gremlins struck Anderson during stage 3 they were leading going in to the Haye Park stage (SS4). Callum Black & Elliott Edmondson (Fiesta R5) were 2nd, just 8 seconds back, but the best part of 20 seconds dropped on stage 4 moved Hugh Hunter & Rob Fagg (Fiesta WRC) up in to 2nd overall at final service.

Bird meanwhile was now the best part of half a minute ahead of the pack and a fastest stage time on the final stage, the longest of the event through Radnor, cemented a memorable win by 31 seconds. Black reclaimed 2nd overall on stage 5, with his 2nd fastest stage of the event and held on to that place to take maximum BTRDA championship points. Hunter lost a big chunk of time on stage 5 and dropped to 4th overall, allowing Stephen Petch & Michael Wilkinson (Fiesta WRC) to claim the final podium place.

The first 2WD crew home were Roger Chilman & Bryan Thomas (Escort MkII) the best part of two minutes ahead of John Perrott & Dan Petrie (Escort MkII) with Ashley Davies & Sam Fordham (Escort MkII) 13 seconds back, to complete the 2WD podium. The first 1400 crew home were Dave & Toby Brick (Nova) just 6 seconds ahead Chris Powell & Jim Lewis (Sunbeam).
