After the snow and ice of 2017 sunny and largely pleasant conditions greeted the crews in North Wales. It was a rally of what might have been as Matt Edwards & Darren Garrod (Fiesta R5) would have won easily had it not been for knocking a wheel off on stage 2. Edwards was fastest by 16 seconds on the opening stage and then set fastest time on stages 4 to 7. So the battle was between Paul Bird & Jack Morton (Focus WRC) and Ollie Mellors & Max Freeman (Iriz R5). Mellors had been fastest on stage 1 then the pair tied on stage 2 before Mellors was fastest on stage 3 to lead by 8 seconds.

The pair swapped times and going in to stage 6 Mellors held a 9 second advantage. Bird took 5 seconds out of Mellors on the Penmachno North stage meaning it was game on for the 2nd run through Elsi. The twistier stage suited the Proton better and Mellors took 2 seconds out of Bird to secure victory by 6 seconds. Reigning 2018 Gold Star Champions Stephen Petch & Michael Wilkinson (Fiesta WRC) were 3rd overall, half a minute behind Mellors.

In the 2WD rally John Rowlands & Glenn Latham (Escort MkII) took victory 24 seconds from the top 1400 crew Chris Powell & Jim Lewis (Sunbeam) with Ieuan Rowlands & Emyr Hall (Avenger) 6 seconds further back completing a good shakedown ahead of their BHRC campaign.
