– Vredestein Snowtrac 5 also tyre of choice for Rallye participant, Porsche expert and UK journalist Johnny Tipler

European tyre company Vredestein supplied the award-winning Snowtrac 5 winter tyres which crossed the finishing line at the end of a gruelling but exciting 2018 Rallye Monte-Carlo Historique. The seafront above the Monaco marina must have been a welcome sight at 4am for the Scottish team in racing businessman Sandy McEwen’s Porsche 914/6.

Enjoying enthusiastic support along the entire route from local crowds who built bonfires at the roadside and, occasionally, shovelled snow onto the track to enliven the proceedings, Sandy McEwen and well-known rally navigator Alan Stark dedicated their achievement to the memory of Scottish racing driver Jim Clark.

“Our Vredestein Snowtrac 5 Winter tyres, although designed for more modern cars, suited the 47-year-old Porsche extremely well in wet, dry and snowy conditions, providing it with rewarding and predictable balance and handling. Also, the Vredestein Arctrac studded tyres we switched to before tackling sections with ice or hard-packed snow were superb and got us out of trouble a few times!” said Sandy.

The 21st Rallye Historique gathers a range of prestigious classic cars with impeccable racing history. Vredestein’s Snowtrac 5s and Arctracs ensured that Sandy’s Porsche completed the race on perfectly suitable tyres with a matching illustrious heritage.

The Scottish crew dedicated its efforts to raise funds for the Jim Clark Museum; Clark, who twice won the Formula 1 World Championship and was victorious in the Indianapolis 500, was tragically killed in a Formula 2 race 50 years ago.

Journalist Johnny Tipler covered the Rallye Historique for a number of magazines, employing his official AC de Monaco media plaque to gain access onto some of the rally’s special stages where his Porsche Boxster S encountered a certain amount of snow and ice.

Said Johnny, ‘we couldn’t possibly have motored along some of these stages without our Vredestein Snowtrac winter tyres; they were invaluable when travelling through the white stuff, imparting complete confidence, and at no time did I feel in peril of losing it.’
