– British Touring Car Championship control turbo manufacturer supplies record grid for this year’s series using UK built external wastegate turbocharger units
– Automotive enthusiasts can now benefit from similar technology via Owen’s range of advanced high-performance ‘GBT’ turbochargers

The legendary Indy circuit at Brands Hatch hosted the opening round of the 2018 Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship over the weekend of 7th / 8th April, as the UK’s fastest racing series blasted back into action with each of 32 strong grid of 350+bhp 2.0-litre race cars using an Owen Developments’ turbocharger.

As Europe’s leading high performance forced induction specialist, Oxfordshire based Owen Developments has been the control supplier of BTCC turbochargers since 2011, and for 2018 Owen’s has updated the appearance of its BTCC control turbocharger to reflect its newly launched, British made ‘GBT’ range of advanced, no-compromise, external wastegate high performance/ motorsport turbocharger units.

The 2018 BTCC season sees official works supported efforts from BMW, Honda, Vauxhall and Subaru, plus independent campaigns from Alfa Romeo, Ford, Mercedes, MG and Toyota runners, with many teams opting to use the TOCA Swindon prepared ‘spec’ engine. Irrespective of powerplant choice, each motor achieves optimal performance courtesy of an Owen Developments’ turbo.

The results of decades of motorsport experience, Owen Developments’ turbos incorporate cutting edge technologies including a motorsport specification low-friction ball bearing centre housing rotational assembly, an HTA billet aluminium compressor wheel and aerodynamic lock nut, which combine to maximise gasflow, transient boost response and longevity. Use of a stainless steel turbine housing reduces the overall weight of the turbocharger, offering the dual benefits of improved thermal management and high temperature crack resistance.

And now performance addicts can benefit from this cutting-edge forced induction technology for their car, courtesy of Owen’s range of ‘GBT’ turbochargers. Designed in-house from a clean sheet of paper to maximize both performance and reliability, Owen’s GBT turbochargers combine advanced BTCC style internals with unique features at a lower price point, enabling the company to redefine the industry standards for external wastegate turbocharger units destined for fast road, track day, drifting and serious motorsport use.

“By undertaking the entire GBT range’s CAD design, CNC machining and assembly process in-house,” comments Lee Owen, “we have been able to move the turbo goalposts onwards, fully independent of any commercial or technical restraints that had previously been imposed upon us. The results are the extremely reliable GBT units, very similar to those that that we are proud to again supply to the BTCC for 2018.”
