Open to anyone with a classic car they enjoy using, not just members of FIVA (the Fédération Internationale des Véhicules Anciens or international federation of historic vehicles), this year’s FIVA World Rally is a 450-mile, four-day, non-competitive event in the picturesque countryside of Mid Wales, from 28 August to 1 September 2018.

The touring event celebrates the fun of driving classics on the road – in this case the spectacular scenery and mountain passes of central Wales that are likely to surprise anyone new to the area.

As event organiser Paul Loveridge explains, “We’ve chosen a central hotel venue, so there’s no need to pack up and carry your luggage in the car each day. The emphasis is on friendliness and fun, with plenty of time to complete each day’s route, and we hope to welcome many enthusiasts who’ve never done a tour before as well as more experienced participants.

“We already have more than 20 classic cars registered for the event, from Jaguar Mark 2 and E-type, through Porsche 911, Triumph Stag and TR6, to MGs and Mercedes and many more. So far the cars range in year from 1951 to 1987, but as the routes never stray more than 50 miles from our hotel HQ, owners of much older cars might well feel confident to take part. It could, for example, be ideal for Vintage tourers of quite modest performance. Meanwhile, the drivers so far signed up come from as far afield as Japan and Argentina, with others from Germany, Slovakia and the Czech Republic – plus of course the UK.”

The entry fee of £1,375 covers five nights’ accommodation at the 4-star Metropole Hotel & Spa in Llandrindod Wells, Wales, along with all meals, a full-colour, Tulip-style road book, and a steam train excursion on the Vale of Rheidol Railway. Participants will meet on 27 August at the Metropole, for a pre-event presentation and to collect their documentation.

Those who would like to take part but don’t have an appropriate classic to drive – or who are perhaps unable to bring their own classic to the UK – can still enjoy the event, thanks to the HERO ‘Arrive & Drive’ programme.
