Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance~
I.D. R Pikes Peak thrills visitors in California

The fully-electric Volkswagen I.D. R Pikes Peak once again proved to be a real eye-catcher in Pebble Beach (USA). A host of extraordinary vintage cars and innovative concept vehicles were on display at the 67th Concours d’Elegance, two hours’ drive south of San Francisco.

They included the racing car that made history in the USA on 24 June 2018. Two months after its historic, record-breaking run at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, the I.D. R Pikes Peak returned to the United States for the first time, where it was one of the main attractions.

The Concours d’Elegance is the most famous event of its type in the world and forms the highlight of the Pebble Beach Automotive Week. This iconic event, which has been held every year since 1950 on the 18th hole of Pebble Beach Golf Club in Monterey, California, was not chosen by coincidence: after the I.D. BUZZ electric camper van had caused quite a stir last year, it was the turn of the I.D. R Pikes Peak to take centre stage this time around. The 500- kW (680 PS) electric racing car is the sporty ambassador for the I.D. family – the range of electric production vehicles, which Volkswagen will launch from 2020 onwards.

FIA Formula 3 European Championship
Daniel Ticktum continues to lead the Drivers’ Championship – Jüri Vips turns the screw

Two drivers “powered by Volkswagen” are currently dominating proceedings in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship. Daniel Ticktum (GB) of the Motopark team defended top spot in the Drivers’ Championship at the seventh of the season’s ten race weekends in Misano (I). The Red Bull Junior, at the wheel of a Dallara-Volkswagen, claimed one sixth-place finish and two fourth places in the three races at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli.

Jüri Vips (EST) also produced a very impressive performance in Misano, and consequently climbed into second place in the championship. The 18-year-old rookie from the Motopark team took his third victory of the season in race two in Misano and backed this up with a second place in the final race of the weekend. In a race dominated by heavy rain, Vips was only beaten by his compatriot Ralf Aron (Prema Theodore Racing/Dallara-Mercedes). Ticktum now leads the Drivers’ Championship with 222 points, ahead of Vips with 210.

Jüri Vips (EST), Team Motopark, #44
“Race two was one of the toughest races I’ve ever driven in. When it is wet in places, it is not easy to lead the field, as you have no reference. I felt as though I had a few critical moments on every lap. I tried to stay calm and am delighted with my win. In race three, it took me a while before I was able to overtake Marcus Armstrong. By the time I finally managed, Ralf Aron was already too far in front. I always do really well in the rain, as proven here.”

TCR Asia
Three Golf GTI TCR on the podium – Engstler new championship leader

The leader in TCR Asia drives a Golf GTI TCR: Luca Engstler (D) won race two at the Korea International Circuit, finishing ahead of his two team-mates Mitchell Cheah (MAL) and Diego Moran (EC). This not only made it a one-two-three, but was also the 25th race victory by a Golf GTI TCR driver this year.

Engstler ended the opening race in second place, behind Kantadhee Kusiri (T). However, the reigning TCR Asia champion was making a guest appearance and was, as such, not eligible to score points towards the overall standings. Engstler consequently scored a maximum 55 points and enjoyed a perfect weekend. Going into the season finale in Shanghai, Engstler leads the championship with 143 points. His team-mate Cheah is second with 132 points to his name. The Engstler team has once again already wrapped up the title in the team competition with races to spare – the team’s third success in a row, having also triumphed in 2016 and 2017. The final round of the season takes place at the Shanghai International Circuit on 4 and 5 October.

The second round of the season takes place on 29 and 30 September at Inje Speedium (ROK). More information:
