Bird Manx15aLangwathby rally driver Paul Bird looked set to claim a fourth victory on the IMGold Manx National Rally this weekend after leading from the start but for a second year in succession, his hopes were dashed just three stages from home.

Driving the Mac Tools, Hager, Frank Bird Poultry-backed, Pirelli-shod and Dom Buckley Motorsport-prepared Ford Focus WRC07, Bird along with Welsh co driver Aled Davies was on course to follow up his victories in 2009, 2010 and 2013 and in doing so, avenge the big crash he suffered when well in command last year. manxnat15 (6)The largest entry in a decade saw challenging conditions for the crews on the Isle of Man. Paul Bird & Aled Davies (Focus WRC) struck early and held a comfortable lead after the first four stages before Melvyn Evans & Mark Glennerster (Impreza WRC) struck back on stage 5 to cut the gap back to 20 seconds. It was short lived however as Evans was unable to start stage 6 due to electrical issues so Bird took an overnight lead of just under a minute ahead of Jason Pritchard & Phil Clarke (Focus WRC). After level pegging roughly on Saturday’s opening pair of stages, Bird started to extend his lead and he had almost a minute and three quarters going in to stage 11. That stage would see the demise of Bird though as he punctured early on and by the time the wheel was changed the lead had long since gone and he retired from the rally. This left Pritchard to back up his 2014 win with another excellent result in 2015. Read More »

Scottish crew Dave Weston and Kirsty Riddick took a dominant victory at this weekend’s Somerset Stages Rally, winning all but one of the twelve stages in the Minehead based event.  The Subaru Impreza WRC duo made the long drive from Aberdeen to the third round of the REIS-Ravenol BTRDA Series and emerged clear winners with an exacting 1 minute gap to second placed Jamie Anderson and Jon Scott.  The battle for the runner up spot was a much more uncertain affair, with Mitsubishi WRC pilot Anderson only taking up the position at the half way point of the event from third placed Mitsubishi Lancer crew Luke Francis and John Roberts.

PB_SomersetCumbrian rally driver Paul Bird’s hopes of maintaining his lead in the 2015 REIS-RAVENOL BTRDA Rally Championship suffered a blow when he was forced out of today’s Somerset Stages Rally after just two stages.

somerset15 (5)The final results will show a victory of one minute for David Weston & Kirtsy Riddick (Impreza WRC), combined with 11 stage outright or shared fastest times. After 2 stages Paul Bird & Aled Davies (Focus WRC) along with Hugh Hunter & Andy Marchbank (Impreza WRC) were early retirements so it was Charlie Payne & Carl Williamson (Fiesta) who took up the chase but they then went off on stage 5, so by the mid event it was Luke Francis & John Roberts (Evo IX) who were in 2nd place. Damian Cole & Jack Morton (Focus WRC) were 3rd but closely followed by Jamie Anderson & Jon Scott (Lancer WRC). Through the afternoon stages it was Anderson who made the most progress and lost little time to Weston but gained on both Francis and Cole to take 2nd place. Francis completed the podium a further 29 seconds back with Cole slipping back to 5th on the final stage as Stephen Petch & Ian Windress (Fiesta R5+) grabbed 4th overall on the final stage.
