Matt Edwards made one of the most incredible maiden appearances in the 50-year history of the Donegal International Rally (17-19 June) when he challenged for victory from the start, only to retire from the lead of the event just four stages from the end of the three-day, 20 stage and 187 stage mile classic.

Matt had taken a 19.2 second lead going into SS17, which was the first run over the famous Atlantic Drive stage, when his Pirelli-shod Citroën C3 R5 left the road – the cause of which isn’t determined. Read More »

Triple British Rally champion Matt Edwards will contest the Donegal International Rally (17-19 June) for the first time in a Pirelli-shod Citroën C3 R5.

It will be the Colwyn Bay-based driver’s first rally in a modern state-of-the-art four-wheel drive car since he won the 2021 British title on last year’s Ulster Rally in a Volkswagen Polo GTI R5.

Matt has never driven a Citroën C3 R5 before and this ex-Mads Østberg example is on loan from Darren Gass.

Matt will be co-driven by David Moynihan. Whilst they have never competed together before, they have developed a good working relationship whilst working with Pirelli in this year’s Irish Tarmac Rally Championship. David has also been instrumental in putting the deal to do Donegal together.

Eugene Donnelly, three times winner of the Donegal International Rally, is the latest of the former winners who will be in Donegal at the end of August for Déjà vu Donegal, the rally reunion that is surpassing all expectations. Eugene will be accompanied by Paul Kiely who co-drove when he won in a Toyota Corolla WRC in 2004 and 2005.

Paddy Toner was alongside ‘The Genie’ in 2008 in a Skoda Fabia WEC when the County Derry driver had his third Donegal win. “We knew the response in Donegal would be massive but we had no conception of how big. With three months still to go, we already received 135 entries, giving us no option but to start a reserve list. It is not just the numbers, the quality is outstanding. Seven former winners have now signed up and five more have indicated their intention to join us.”

Eugene Donnelly stormed to an overall fastest time on his way to a season-best result at last weekend’s Donegal International Rally, taking his Hyundai Motorsport Customer Racing i20 R5 to 6th overall and 4th Irish Tarmac Championship contender home in difficult conditions throughout the three-day event (15-17 June).

Donnelly, who has returned to the championship after a break of several years, has enjoyed a one hundred per cent finishing record so far this season as he continues to develop the Hyundai and MRF Tyres for the unique Irish soil. But his Donegal outing has seen a shift in the performance of the four-wheel-drive machine and the Maghera driver was delighted with the result. Read More »
