Volkswagen Power drives Norris and Eriksson to victory
Lando Norris (GB, Team Carlin) and Joel Eriksson (S, Team Motopark) presented Volkswagen with two victories at the opening round of the FIA Formula 3 European Championship at Silverstone (GB). After missing the ELMS race in 2016 we were back at Silverstone for the full weekend and the 4 hour race proved to be dramatic to the end. Will Owen/Hugo de Saedeleer/Filipe Albuquerque (United Autosports – Ligier/Gibson) took a last gasp victory from Memo Rojas/Ryo Hirakawa/Leo Roussel (G-Drive Racing – Oreca/Gibson) who were struggling on old tyres at the end of the race. Dennis Andersen/Anders Fjordbach (High Class Racing – Dallara/Gibson) completed the podium. In LMP3 John Falb/Sean Rayhall (United Autosports – Ligier/Nissan) took victory with the GTE victory going to Salih Yoluc/Euan Hankey/Nicki Thiim (TF Sport – Aston Martin Vantage V8).

Unlike our last visit in 2013 this race went the distance and was not short of controversy. With the top 3 finishing just over 20 seconds apart after 4 thrilling hours of racing it was the Greaves Motorsport Gibson 015S-Nissan driven by Gary Hirsch/Bjorn Wirdheim/Jon Lancaster that took victory by less than half a second from the Jota Sport Gibson-Nissan of Simon Dolan/Filipe Albuquerque/Harry Tincknell. The talking point came when in the last 15 minutes of the race when Lancaster appeared to take out the Thiriet by TDS Oreca 05 driven by Tristan Gommendy at Aintree, whilst team mates Ludovic Badey & Pierre Thiriet could only look on. The FIA Formula 3 European Championship kicks off in 2014 with a new partner. After having sucessfully engaged in last year’s young-talent series as a Live Stream Presenter and technical support for the Dutch Van Amersfoort Racing team, RAVENOL, the manufacturer of premium lubricants, will become an official series partner for the FIA Formula 3 European Championship from 2014. A packed weekend down at Silverstone and this is installment one from the Saturday. We got two European Formula 3 races, qualifying for the World Endurance Championship but the main feature was European Le Mans Series qualifying, followed by the 3 hour race. With the rain clouds setting in towards the end of the first hour the race became a battle of who could keep it on the track. A safety car followed at about 1hr 40mins in and the race was neutralised until the 75% race distance point had been reached and the red flag could be dropped, with full points awarded. Read More »
Volkswagen will again line up on the starting grids of three of the most prestigious European Formula 3 championships with a high calibre driver line-up. Macau Grand Prix winner Edoardo Mortara (Italy), last year’s ATS Formula 3 Cup runner-up Laurens Vanthoor (Belgium) and 2009 ADAC Formula Masters champion Daniel Abt (Germany) are heading a squad of seven teams contesting the British Formula 3 Championship, Formula 3 Euro Series and ATS Formula 3 Cup using ‘Volkswagen Power’ in the form of a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine developing close to 210 PS.
