Dukeries Rally – a win and three cars in the top five
Andy Burton furthered his lead in the Silverstone Tyres BTRDA Rally Series last weekend (June 11) courtesy of a fourth career victory in the Dukeries Rally. The familiar Kumho-shod Peugeot Cosworth of Burton and co-driver Robin Kellard finished the event 24 seconds clear of the Ford Focus WRC of defending BTRDA Gold Star Champions Steve Perez and Paul Spooner. The revised Formula 3 Euro Series that comprises three rather than two races per meeting, got off to a flying start at the Circuit Paul Ricard on the weekend 1-3 April. Not only were the teams adjusting to the new format, but also to the brand new Kumho control tyre that features a stiffer construction and softer tread compound than its predecessor. One thing was clear from the outset, the new covers were capable of quicker times, and by the end of the meeting Daniel Abt of the Signature team had lowered the Series’ lap record round Paul Ricard by a staggering 0.705 seconds. Kumho’s all new F3 tyre has received the thumbs up from the Euro Series teams, following the official pre-season tests in Valencia and Barcelona. This follows the first change in tyre specification since the Series’ foundation in 2003 and guarantees a level playing field for all 2011 runners, as data from previous years will be irrelevant to the new covers.
