harryflatters15 (5)Wet and windy conditions dominated the day on this years Harry Flatters which saw Damian Cole & Jack Morton take their Fiesta WRC to a maiden victory. At the lunch break they were second overall after an understandably tentative start in the new car which saw an inspired Mark Jones & Terry Martin (BMW M3) take the lead by 18 seconds. A string of 3 further fastest stage times saw Cole win by 49 seconds with Jones a superb 2nd overall. A broken windscreen wiper saw Eian Pritchard & Steve McPhee (Focus WRC) drop a whole heap of time on the opening stage but with that fault fixed they came back through the field to finish 3rd overall. harryflatters14 (62)The first of two summer events on the Epynt military ranges saw a frustrating day for the top two crews as they beat the bogey time on 7 of the 13 stages, so it was all decided on the 6 shorter stages. Damian Cole & Jack Morton (Focus WRC) ultimately won by 2 seconds and in no small part this all came down to the 4 seconds they took out of Mark Straker & Neil Harrison (Darrian T90 GTR) on the opening stage. Straker made up 3 seconds on stages 4 & 5 before dropping a second on the 8th stage and after that both he and Cole were deadlocked as they matched each other to the second or took the bogey times. Completing the podium, after a late call to start in place of Mark Worley, were Melvyn Evans & David Gamblin (Fiesta R5+) who were on the limiter for so much on the stages. Read More »

SONY DSCA mixed day of weather conditions, up on the ranges, made it a tyre selection lottery and one which provided a surprising result. If anything you would have expected a WRC or 4WD rally car at least to have dominated this event but against all odds Mark Straker & Neil Harrison took their Darrian T90 GTR to a fine 13 second win overall. After going fastest on the opening pair of stages Damian Cole & Jonathan Griffiths (Focus WRC) were leading by over 6 seconds but the longest stage of the loop saw Straker go fastest by almost 10 seconds. Straker then went fastest on all the stages of the 2nd loop, beating the bogey on the 3rd stage of that loop. Cole took stage 7, Straker stage 8 by a bigger margin and on the final stage lost almost 12 seconds of his lead to flatter Cole’s 2nd place. Peter Lloyd & Neil James (Impreza WRC) completed the podium over a minute further back, having not quite been on the pace all day. Read More »

The first trip on to asphalt in this years BHRC and a full championship return for the Harry Flatters Rally. It saw an epic battle which led to victory for Gareth James & Steffan Evans (Escort MkII) beating Nick Elliott & Dave Price (Escort MkII) on a rare asphalt outing. The gap was just under 25 seconds but crucially Elliott failed to win category 3 for the first time this year whilst category 2 saw main title contenders Julian Reynolds & Patrick Walsh (Escort MkI) fight back from gearbox issues early on to win the category and finish 3rd overall just under a minute back. It had been a long time since we last watched on the asphalt up on the military ranges and as ever there was a bumper entry. In the main rally Peter Lloyd & Graham Handley (Impreza WRC) dominated to win the event by almost a minute and a half. 2nd place was a revelation though as Mark Straker & Neil Harrison took their Darrian T90 GTR to a fine 2nd overall in their first event in anger, for the new car. Completing the podium were Chris Jones & Carl Williamson (Focaru) a similar margin back on their first event in best part of a year. Read More »

A mixed day made the first two loops of stages a tyre lottery over the Epynt military ranges on this years Harry Flatters rally. Damien Cole & Craig Drew (Focus WRC) were fastest out of the blocks and were fastest on the first six stages to lead by 14.5 seconds from a hard charging Peter Lloyd & Graham Handley (Impreza WRC S14). On stage 7, the final stage of loop 3, Lloyd set the fastest time shaving almost 3 seconds off Cole’s lead meaning it was game on for the final two stages. Meanwhile back in 3rd were John Indri & Dave Engwell (Darrian T90 GTR) just holding at bay Eian Pritchard & Martin Jones who were getting used to their newly acquired Impreza WRC S11. Read More »

Harry Flatters 09 (4)Tragedy struck on this years Harry Flatters when life long rally enthusiast John Phillips was hit in a freak accident. Whilst the rally continued, a dark cloud was left over the events proceedings. In the rally an intense battle was played out between Mark Solloway and Gwyndaf Evans. Solloway, co-driven by Den Golding, held a slender one second lead overnight and the Epynt specialist locked horns all day with the former British Champion until Gwyndaf’s car expired after the final stage. Terry Brown & Will Rogers took second a somewhat distant two and a half minutes behind with Julian Reynolds & Ian Oakey close behind in third, making it an all Escort MkII and Classic top three.

harryflatters08_frontThe first of the August trips to Epynt and the Historics took centre stage. Mark Solloway took a commanding victory after a sheep ruined his 2007 hopes.

In the moderns it proved to be Peter Lloyd’s event after a good battle with Damian Cole and Eian Pritchard, following the demise of Melvyn Evans.
