With the dust literally and figuratively settled on the MSA British Rally Championship’s first round, it is time to leave the forest gravel for the ‘tar’ of the Jim Clark Rally. Big brakes and Pirelli slicks fitted, suspension stiffened – all that’s needed are the closed roads of the Scottish Borders – bring on the black stuff!

The Jim Clark Rally is unique on the British mainland as the only closed public-road rally and as such holds challenges peculiar to driving flat out on roads that are usually used by locals to go about their daily business.

The crews’ challenge starts with the reconnaissance of the stages; using diagrams and maps, they must traverse the route within the speed limit and abide by normal road-traffic laws. Read More »

Jukka Korhonen and Marko Salminen finished the final stage of the Pirelli Richard Burns Foundation Rally 42.5 seconds clear of the chasing pack, making the 29 year old the first Finn to win a round of the MSA British Rally Championship since Jari-Matti Latvala ten year ago.

The pair led from start to finish in their Citroën DS3 R3T, building a lead of around a minute before easing off on Sunday when Alastair Fisher/Gordon Noble’s early challenge was curtailed by a puncture on Saturday’s fifth stage.

The victory was a smooth one; car and team working seamlessly on the eighty mile event, with Korhonen admitting that he had speed to spare if needed. With the win comes a maximum points haul towards a championship title that he had vowed to win as long ago as last year – so far, so good. Read More »

This year’s MSA British Manufacturers’ title is a three-way battle between the brands: Citroën, Renault and Ford. Scores towards the title are calculated from the two leading cars from each of the manufacturers.

With Citroën DS3 drivers Keith Cronin scoring his third victory of the season and Osian Pryce claiming his first ever BRC podium with an excellent third place, it means that Citroën UK has extended its lead in the manufacturer’s championship and currently stands on 183 points. Elfyn Evans’ stunning second place in his Ford Fiesta R2, coupled with Matthew Cathcart’s impressive sixth in his similar car, sees Ford Motor Company consolidate its second place on 151 points, whilst the lone finisher for Renault UK Garry Pearson means that they remain third on 133. This year’s MSA British Manufacturers’ title is a three-way battle between the brands: Citroën, Renault and Ford, with scores towards the title calculated from the two leading cars from each of the manufacturers.

Wins in rounds two and three means that Citroën UK leads the standings by 18-points, with Renault UK’s win on round one seeing them hold second place – albeit only three points ahead of Ford Motor Company, who has shown that consistency, rather than having an R3 category car, can pay off. With just a few days to go before the third round of this year’s MSA British Rally Championship, teams are now preparing for one of the most challenging events in the calendar: the Pirelli International Rally. Why challenging? Because all of the rally’s competitive mileage takes place in the infamous Kielder Forest, its well-trodden gravel roads holding a reputation for rewarding the brave and punishing those who dare to make a mistake.

With two different winners emerging and fierce battles raging throughout the field in February’s International Rallye Sunseeker and March’s Bulldog International Rally of North Wales, the BRC’s innovative and forward-thinking two-wheel-drive only formula has generated close and exciting competition. Therefore, much anticipation hangs in the air as to who will come out on top this time around. Read More »

After a dramatic day’s action, Tom Cave and co-driver Craig Parry emerged winners of the Bulldog International Rally of North Wales and in doing so, recorded their first MSA British Rally Championship victory.

They finished just three seconds ahead of Keith Cronin/Marshall Clarke, who were in-turn 11.7 seconds ahead of Jarkko Nikara/Petri Nikara – all three crews in Citroën DS3s and proving once again that the BRC’s two-wheel-drive formula provides ultra-close competition. Read More »

The second round of this year’s MSA British Rally Championship takes place this Friday and Saturday, when competitors make their way to Welshpool for the Bulldog Rally of North Wales. The event also marks the second round of the new-look BRC, with its innovative and forward-thinking format that allows only two-wheel-drive cars to compete for the prestigious British titles.

If there was any question as to whether the new two-wheel-drive formula would provide exciting competition, it was well and truly answered on last month’s opening round, the Bournemouth and Poole based Rallye Sunseeker. Read More »
