Former World Rally Champions Hannu Mikkola and Stig Blomqvist reacquainted themselves with the awesome Audi quattro rallycar thrilling crowds at Knockhill in Scotland last weekend (16-17 May).

“Flying Finn” Mikkola, and his long standing co-driver Arne Hertz, plus “Super Swede” Blomqvist, drove a rare 30-year-old Audi Sport quattro S1 E2 at the McRae Rally Challenge, a special two-day rally event celebrating the 20th anniversary of Colin McRae’s World Rally Championship win and attended by 8,000 spectators. The entry list is now pretty much finalised, and will be issued shortly for the two-day inaugural McRae Rally Challenge which is being supported by Beatson’s Building Supplies and EventScotland, to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Colin McRae and Derek Ringer becoming the first Brits to win the FIA World Rally Championship. Stig Blomqvist, winner of the inaugural Roger Albert Clark Rally in 2004, will return to the event in November to try and win for the second time as the early entry list starts to include some of the big names of historic rallying.
 
Blomqvist, the 1984 World Rally Champion, and Ana Goni will compete in a Ford Escort Mk2 from David Sutton’s team, contesting the rally for the third time having also finished second overall in 2005 to Mark Higgins. “This event is just like the RAC Rally was in the 1970s and 1980s,” said Blomqvist. World Rally Champion Stig Blomqvist has confirmed his attendance at Rallyday 2009, which takes place on Saturday 19 September at Castle Combe Circuit, Wiltshire, UK.

Stig won the World Rally Championship in 1984, behind the wheel of the iconic Audi quattro, and contributed to Audi winning their second Manufacturer’s title.

The quattro changed the face of rallying through the 1980s and Stig will be driving the final evolution of the mighty vehicle – in the form of the quattro S1 E2 – through the Feature Rally Stage in front of an expected 10,000 rally fans. Read More »
