The Motorsport Safety Fund has decided to wind up its operations and hand its training resources over to the UK motorsport’s governing body, the MSA.

The organisation’s remaining funds will be transferred to the British Motor Sport Training Trust once the winding up process is complete.

Fund chairman, Dr Ian Roberts, said: “The Fund has made a major contribution to motorsport safety in the 45 years since it was established, following the death of Roger Williamson during the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort.

“However, recent developments in training and motorsport technology have led us to conclude that, if we continued, we would end up attempting to duplicate the activities of national and international organisations that have greater resources and access to technical expertise.” Read More »

Leading motorsport and technology company chief and former World Rally Championship-winning co-driver David Richards is to deliver the 2018 Motorsport Safety Fund’s Watkins Lecture at the Autosport International show.

The Prodrive chairman, who was appointed a CBE for his services to motorsport, will deliver the lecture, named after the late FIA Formula One Safety & Medical Delegate Professor Sid Watkins, less than a fortnight after taking over as chairman of UK motor sport’s governing body, the Motor Sports Association (MSA). The 2017 Watkins Lecture is presented by the Motorsport Safety Fund. 11.15am on 13 January 2017 at Autosport International, NEC, Birmingham.

FIA safety chief Laurent Mekies is to deliver the Motorsport Safety Fund’s Watkins Lecture at Autosport International, as the annual event, named after the late FIA Formula One Safety and Medical Delegate Professor Sid Watkins, completes its second decade.

Laurent Mekies manages the FIA’s Safety Department and works on defining a global strategy for safety in motorsport. He is also General Manager for Research at the Global Institute for Motor Sport Safety, the Swiss-based corporation which undertakes research to improve motorsport safety worldwide at all levels.
