Meirion Evans scores first major rally win of his career – and first for the Volkswagen Polo GTI R5 and Michelin Pilot Sport A tyre in the UK

Meirion Evans has scored his first major rally win of his career after taking the overall victory on the Dunoon Presents Argyll Rally in Scotland.

After eight regularities and eight tests in a compact 149 mile route, Angus McQueen and Mike Cochrane scored their second win of 2021, (BMW 323i) by just six seconds from another 2021 podium sitting crew, Alastair Leckie and Matt Outhwaite (SAAB 900 Turbo). Four crews were involved in the frontline ‘War of the Wolds’ including Paul Bloxidge and his 15 year old star navigator grandson, Oli Waldock and the impressive John Lomas and Pete Johnson in their 1936 Riley Sprite, really taking it to the moderns with a superb third place podium for the vintage car. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the popular annual event, which features a spectacular blend of exciting action on the famous hill climb course, historic-car demonstrations, classic-car displays, trade stands and vintage-themed entertainment.

A blue plaque will be unveiled at the historic Worcestershire venue to honour Murray Walker OBE. The much-loved commentator made his first appearance behind the microphone at Shelsley Walsh in 1948. He later admitted that he used the occasion as an audition for the BBC top brass who were in attendance, and it worked. Walker went on to commentate at the 1949 British Grand Prix, and the rest is history! Read More »

British rally co-driver Phil Hall guided Jon Armstrong to an historic category victory at the opening round of the FIA European Rally Championship last weekend, debuting the M-Sport Poland built Ford Fiesta Rally3 in the series at ORLEN 77th Rally Poland (18-20 June).

The 32-year-old RAF Motorsport High Performing Athlete from Nottinghamshire would dovetail his assault on the FIA Junior World Rally Championship with an outing in a new generation of four-wheel-drive rally car from the M-Sport factory in Krakow, contesting the ERC3 category at the grueling high-speed gravel event. It was a positive weekend at Zandvoort for both Team WRT and Penrith driver Frank Bird in the second round of the Fanatec GT World Cup Europe powered by AWS Sprint Cup, as they took a double podium in the Silver Cup.

The 21-year-old Cumbrian and Japanese teammate Ryuichiro Tomita followed up a superb third place in yesterday’s opening one-hour race with another superb effort to claim third place in today’s race in the factory-supported Audi R8 LMS. Read More »

Jonny Greer and Kirsty Riddick have won the McGrady Insurance Stages Rally, round one of the McGrady Insurance Motorsport UK Northern Ireland Rally Championship!

Their victory marked a hugely successful return to action for rallying. It was the first stage rally held in Northern Ireland since March 2020 and with the sun beating down on County Down’s Bishopscourt Race Circuit – the same venue that hosted the last event before the pandemic took hold – Greer and Riddick romped home to victory with their Citroen C3 R5. The Old Forge Garage Mewla Rally are appealing for spectators not to attend the event at the request of the Ministry of Defence. Like the Nicky Grist Stages this year’s event will see higher than usual amounts of training taking place on the Epynt Ranges.

If you attempt to spectate on either event, you will not only risk the cancellation of these events but all future rallying on the Epynt Ranges. Read More »
